Serendipity

Whilst looking for plant images for Moog's powerpoint presentation to D. Stewart (of the Stewart Fellowship) for the sculpture garden, instead of finding an image of a sargentino crabapple tree, we found a blog about cupcakes. And it's awesome. I'll put it down to the marvelous serendipity that has graced the museum lately, it must have trailed me home. Check it out: cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com

"Unbound" is fantastic. I really hope you can see it. Margy and I have been working extremely hard on it. Margy more than me. I'm more excited about this exhibit than I ever have been about any other exhibit, ever. It's fabulous. Pictures later.

I can't tell you how good it felt to clear off the dusty shelves in the museum bookstore and display colorful, vibrant children's books. Trevor helped me with it today, and I noticed I was more excited to work on the bookstore and to get the books to look terrific than any other assignment I've had at the museum so far --- and I think it's a sign. Maybe it's just from years of working at bookstores. Or maybe I actually just really love books more than art.

Anyway, I sort of guided Vern and his daughter through "Unbound" today getting them excited and telling them what I know. Vern turned to me and said: "You should become an art historian whose specialty is children's book illustration. It could be your niche!"

I've never thought of it before, and the thought is intriguing.

Oh, and a funny story. So I sent out an e-mail yesterday to some illustrators and started it with something inane like "I'm the new Stewart Fellow at the Springville Museum of Art, and wondered if..." One of the replies to my e-mail started "Dear Stewart, ....." Ha ha! I'm that Stewart fellow who hangs out at the museum. Margy's been addressing me as Stewart in her e-mails ever since.

..........And when am I going to get my rough draft of my thesis done before December 1st?

  1. I SO wish I could see the exhibit! Why does all the neat stuff happen in Utah when I'm not there, huh?

  2. The show was absolutely fabulous! And the bookstore looked so great too - I was so happy. I tried to make it look more exciting when I was the Stewart Fellow, but it never looked as good as it does now. The colorful children's books really do add a lot, don't they? (And isn't it nicer to work in a space that isn't austere or dusty?)

Congrats on a great show. I especially loved the pop-up books. It was so nice to see you today, too.

Can you e-mail me and tell me what your schedule is so I can see you when I go to the exhibit?
