- I've always liked how big Trevor is. It was one of the first things I noticed about him the night we met, and I was immediately attracted to it. I remember thinking "Wow. He's like, a man." Yes, I was eighteen. But compared to my circle of sweet and friendly (and painfully skinny and tall) guy friends in high school, Trevor looked like a Titan. A hot Titan with an artist's sketch pad, and big muscly arms. Yum yum. He's always made me feel small. His size does sometimes pose a problem, like when we're trying to fit into my family's PT Cruiser. Yeah, Trevor doesn't fit. It's pretty funny.
- Today's three favorite songs on my playlist: Andrew Bird's "Fitz & Dizzyspells" from the album Noble Beast, Benny Goodman's "Them There Eyes" on the album Yale: Vol. 4 - Big Band Recordings, and finally "Sous le ciel d'Afrique" by Joséphine Baker.
- It's cliché for an art historian to like Vincent van Gogh. I don't think he's as great as his mythic reputation, but I do love to immerse in his paintings. When I really look at them for a while, my finger tips and lips feel the paint. In my fantasy world I actually run my fingers across the dips, ridges, swirls, dabs, dashes, cuts, streams, rivets and swabs of pink, green, blue, purple, orange, yellow, and browns of van Gogh. Apparently I'm not the only one. So many viewers have this visceral reaction to his sensual canvases they must all be encased in glass to protect them from wandering fingers, and in my case, lips.
This is his
Almond Tree in Blossom of 1888, appropriate for March since the almond tree is first to bloom every spring.
I went through a whole long snooty period where I went "Ach! Van Gogh!" I was a grown-up, don't you know. And then I went to the exhibit in LA 7 or 8 years ago and fell madly in love again. Like seriously.
ReplyDeleteHis paintings are passionate and accessible and completely tactile. Who can resist?
