Today I did a fifteen minute presentation to the Kiwanis Club about "Buy a Plant, Build the Garden." It was like taking a step back two generations. The lunch discussion was centered on the newest pacemakers, and we said the pledge of allegiance after a bell was rung.
Clubs and societies like that (The Rotary Club, The Daughters of the American Revolution, Kiwanis, etc.) I think were a part of my grandparents' generation that will not continue into mine. I don't think my generation is as interested in participating in the community in that way, nor do they need that kind of social interaction. I'm not finger-wagging at my selfish generation, because I think we serve in different ways. Being on Semester at Sea four years ago brought me into contact with so many amazing, globally-minded people my age doing Habitat for Humanity in South Africa and visiting orphanages in Tanzania, China and India. I think there is a lot of good things going on in my generation, but I think formal clubs and organizations are a thing of the past.
Just an observation.
