bouncing baby

I am obsessed with baby names. On the two bunsen burners in my brain, I've got my thesis on one and baby names on the other. I should be more specific - it's just boy names on that burner.
Not that we know yet if we're having a boy or girl, that will come on our doctor's visit March 2nd. It's just that I want a girl, and therefore think I will probably have a boy. Or at least I'm mentally preparing to have a boy. My whole life I basically only imagined having girls (because I was ten when my sister was born, and I helped raise her? Because I adore little girls? Because I don't like mean, rock-throwing, hockey stick boys? Hmm...) At least I'm open about my bias, right? I'm sure I will love baby no matter if it's a girl or boy.

Anyway. Trev and I have few boy names we both like. I like Gilbert (my Dad's middle name, and Gilbert Blythe baby!), Trevor hates it. Trevor likes Lincoln, I think its the name of obnoxious car. We both think Sawyer's cool, but it means "wood cutter." I am constantly plagued with doubts like: "Could he survive junior high with that name?" "Could he apply to a prestigious job interview with that name and a handshake?" "Would he have to spell it more than once on the telephone?" "What kind of associations do others make with that name?"

Amy M. suggested we look through genealogy to find some names. So tonight I went through our binders filled with Trevor's (mostly Welsh) genealogy, and I've compiled a list of names from it we like, with pros and cons.

Any comments, thoughts, opinions are much appreciated.

1. Peter. We both l o v e this name. But it's the junior high issue. My brothers inform me he may never survive being named Peter in a junior high locker room.

2. Elias. Cool. But too heavy?

3. Morgan. Trev's genealogy is littered with this name. This fills the criteria for the interview and handshake thing.

4. Henry. Trevor's favorite boy name. I vacillate between "it's okay" and "Mleh." Maybe a middle name?

5. George. I like it, Trev is okay with it.

6. Charles. Yes, I'm serious. I like Charlie for short. But there's so many famous Charlies (chocolate factory, blockhead, Prince, he bit me) that maybe it's no longer viable as a real person's name.

7. Alexander. We both like this one. Alexander the Great was a really interesting historical figure, and had severely cool hair in his portrait busts. Xander would be a cool nick name.

8. Graham. I adore this name. But Trevor says everyone would call him "Graham-Ma." And I'm not sure if living with "cracker" following his name throughout life is a good idea for a white boy.

9. Daniel. We both like it, but maybe not the point of loving it.

So there it is, so far. I'm constantly adding and subtracting. I guess we could just narrow down to the ones that stay on the list longest.

Seriously, I'd love some help.

  1. lol Charlie he bit me XD HAHAHA!!

Well, Eli is already on my list of names, so I say NO for you naming him that! (lol jk I have no control over what you name for kid.. though Elias is different from Eli I gues..)
My best friend Clarke has a brother named Peter. It suites him. Lincoln is also on my personal list of boys names. Abraham was also on there (farther down), and only a few months ago did I see the 2 together and realize I had Abraham Lincoln on my list of names.. XD Abraham is now gone. :P
hehe if it's a girl, you should look at Grandpa Priest's side of the family.. Cinderella perhaps? ;-D lol

  2. I like Morgan Henry best from your list!
I also like Daniel. My sister is also pregnant and due in August. Daniel is her pick if she has a boy, and I really like it.
Can I also suggest Rhys? It's Welsh. I like the name, and it helps that every Rhys I have ever met has been really cool!
I too obsess about baby names, even though it is not biologically possible for me to have more babies. If we were to get another boy and I got to name him, he'd be Paul Henry. I have a long list of girl names I like. I'll share them with you sometime when I don't have to rush off to work!

  3. Once again, I LOVE your post! I agree with most everything you said. Blake and I might vote for Sawyer because we really like that character on LOST. I like Alexander. Alex is a good nickname as is Xander. How cool is that?! My car is currently named Alex, but it's an awesome car! We would also be willing to rename my car to avoid any confusion with your baby. If you're going for family names, may I suggest Blake? It brings to mind humor, talent, good looks, and just general awesomeness.

  4. I'll adore any name you choose because I'll take one look at that baby of yours and fall in love.

Re your list--I like all these names a ton, although Alexander gets used a lot. I ran Peter past my boys. They have friends named Peter and say the grief isn't terrible. As my youngest said, "all names have sexual connotations." Then again, he is 15. I think my favorite of the group is Elias, actually.

I told Ken if we had a sixth boy we should name him Dante and I was dead serious. And he was scared. And so we stopped having kids.

  6. My niece Tess has a little friend named Dante. Let me say, you will know when you see the child if you are to name him something that intense. I vote for Alexander, but only because I want the others for myself and Xander if so cool. In that case, just name the babe Xander.
However, you are having a girl.

  7. So Eli is the nickname that we would use for Elliot, and that would be kind of funny if we both had an Eli the same age, hummm, whose done that before??? Also I like Graham and dont see a problem with the whole Gram ma thing. I also like George, but think of Emma and of course our favorite kiss. And I thought it was you who liked henry.
