Classic Childrens Books

So, according to you, my dear readers, the list of most classic childrens books would be in this order, starting with the most classic:

Where the Wild Things Are

Make Way for Ducklings

Goodnight Moon

The Cat and the Hat

Curious George
and The Hungry Caterpillar tied for last place.

Interesting. I was surprised how low The Hungry Caterpillar ranked in 'classic-ness.'

Are there any picture books from your childhood you consider a classic? Any little-known favorites that should be classics? Any new children's books you predict may become classics?

  1. My favorite as a kid was always Ferdinand the Bull. I loved the story, but thought the drawings were the best part.

  2. My favorite when I was really little was "The Little Red Caboose." http://www.amazon.com/Little-Red-Caboose-Golden-Book/dp/0307021521
Another one I LOVE is "The Little House" By I think Virginia Lee Burton.

  3. I have your blog on Google Reader, so I didn't even that you had this poll up until I read your post. For the record, I would have voted for "Goodnight Moon."

I really loved the books "Gregory the Terrible Eater" and "Avocado Baby" growing up. Even today, I still think of the latter every time I eat avocados.

  4. you know, I've never ever heard of "Make Way for Ducklings". I had a hard time deciding between Where the Wild Things Are and Goodnight moon, but before I even saw the answers, Goodnight Moon popped into my head (followed shortly by the Wild Things), so I chose Goodnight Moon.
I had so many books as a kid.. but I can't remember most of their names. :\
